At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Yaeyama was assigned to "Operation M" (the invasion of the southern Philippines) deploying from Palau to mine the Surigao Strait. On January 3, 1942, she became flagship for Admiral Rokuzo Sugiyama's Third Southern Expeditionary Fleet and covered landings at Subic Bay, and was based at Manila from July 1942 under the overall command of the Southwest Area Fleet.
Yaeyama was refit as an anti-submarine convoy escort ship in December 1943, with all minelaying rails removed and replaced by 36 depth charges, and was reassigned to the First Southern Expeditionary Fleet.

После этого Соэда Хисаюки становится командиром японского гарнизона на острове Науру и отается в этой должности вплоть до окончания войны: Although Captain Takenouchi officially assumed responsibility as the head of the 67 Naval Guard Force, he was ill and confined to his bed most of the time. Therefore, in reality, Lt. Nakayama effectively served as Commander from the very establishment of the 67 Naval Guard Force until July 1943. Due to Captain Takenouchi’s illness, Captain Soeda Hisayuki was appointed to replace the commander on 7 July, only four months after Takenouchi’s arrival at the post. Soeda arrived in Nauru on 13 July. Two days later, Takenouchi left Nauru and Soeda remained as Commander of the 67 Naval Guard Force until the end of the war.7
On 13 September 1945, the Australian Army’s 31/51 Battalion arrived on Nauru. On the quarterdeck of the Australian frigate HMAS Diamantina, Captain Soeda surrendered Nauru to the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Army.
